Yoga Nidra originated in India for the purpose of increasing awareness of oneself.  The expansion of consciousness is a never ending and compounding experience, and the more you use it, the more extensive your awareness will become. Yoga Nidra means “yogic sleep” although it is not sleep.  It is a state on conscious Deep Sleep.  Confused?  With meditation, you remain in the Waking State of consciousness, and gently focus the mind, whilce allowing thought patterns, emotions, sensations, and images to arise.  In Yoga Nidra, you leave the Waking State, go past the Dreaming State, and go to Deep Sleep but remain awake.
